Haikus // 2021

Because I began writing haikus in August a couple of years ago, I’m now stuck with an annual retrospective that falls at an odd time. It’s a strange time capsule, spat out at the end of summer.

The obvious solution would be to wait until new year’s eve, but I’m not going to do that this time around.

Are we more than just

a crackle of fat in the

microwave of life?

Somehow these four months

bled into one another

but tasted like years.

This year was made of fragments

A kaleidoscope.

Don’t you dare do us over

Like twenty twenty.

“Valentine’s weekend”

isn’t formally recognised

but must be observed.

March 8th, 2021

“You alright, buddy?

Slow day? Are the kids at school?”

Yeah. Something like that.

April 16th, 2021

The ice cream van’s here

blaring its playful siren.

We’re trying to work.

April 23rd, 2021

Carriage sails through rail

on the train back from Totnes;

Streaks of land, sea, sky.

May 16th, 2021

A nature writers’

circle twists and coils around

the roots of stories.

June 3rd, 2021

The abnormal lurks

down the alley, out of sight.

It pounces, naked.
